CHARACTER: Jack Stevens

Dan's dad is a homophobic jerk.  He should not have had the responsibility of raising Dan.  When I first conceived him, he was mildly homophobic.  In the end he became something more extreme.

I needed to have him have a vice.  I needed to have reason for Dan to be distant from his father apart from being gay.  Specifically, I needed for this vice to be the reason why he stays separated from his son for over a week.  Alcoholism didn't seem to fit the criteria, as he could have come back and drank at the lodge.  I don't think that hard drugs would have been in the house, that Tate would have allowed himself to be around a drug addict.  Gambling really didn't fit either, as being in the middle of nowhere wouldn't present a reason to be gone in a week.

Sex.  Dan's dad has an issue with sex.  Initially it was just sex.  But keeping him home for over a week for sex at Tate's plotting would require the use of a prostitute.  So the addiction turned into whores.  It also explains not having much money for giving Dan anything: decent car, college, or anything else.

By normalizing sex with a hooker, Dan's dad really doesn't understand the emotional connection found outside a sex for pay situation.  His sexual identity is fake.  Dan sees this, and it adds to his distance from his father.
