TOPIC - Porn versus Erotica

When I started Sgt Tate it was going to be a story built around a lot of sex scenes.  I had the scenes pretty much planned out.  Yeah it was going to be Tate training Dan and getting closer and closer.  Tate takes it too far with Boris, but the sex scenes come back afterwards.  I wasn't planning on much of the emotional side of the torture scene to dominate the last part of the story.

So there I was writing the rest area scene when Reg—a friend, an editor, and fellow lover of aggressive alpha males—asked if I was going to do something with Tate's character besides make him just a dick with a dick.  I had every intention to give him some background information, but I knew that I had to really turn him around to get him likable again.  So I put a lot into the story of Tate and Valley.

When I completed it, and then wrote the undressing scene followed by the fucking, the sex took on a whole new feel to it.  It was no longer cold and unwelcoming.  Now there is a strong connection between Tate and Dan.  The hunting on the next day continued it.  Now there was no turning back.  I felt that I was committing to an erotic story.

I thought erotica was soft core porn where the writing takes precedence over the sexual activities.  I realized after writing these days that this is fucking bullshit.  I realized that the sex is only part of the story, an integral part, but a part nonetheless.  The story and characters drive the action.  They add multiple layers to the action including the sex.  Most, if not all, of the sex scenes have some character or plot development as part of it.  The scenes at the end of the story have many different layers to the emotional side that it is not just sex.
